Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea and it’s link to Dentistry

Sleep Apnea is a medical condition whereby breathing stops repeatedly throughout the night. It has to be diagnosed by a sleep pathologist and there is a range from mild to severe.

At Richmond West Dental, part of a new patient exam is to assess and evaluate a patient’s risk for Sleep Apnea.  This includes evaluation of your neck, the back of your throat, and general signs that point toward you not being able to breath at night.

Sleep apnea can go undiagnosed for years and the systemic consequences can be severe causing many conditions including cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and even stroke.

If sleep apnea is suspected, we will refer you to your family doctor for a sleep apnea test, which is usually covered under OHIP.  Treatment options can include a simple night-time oral appliance, to a CPAP machine, and even surgical intervention.

If you have severe snoring, always feel tired, fatigued, sleepy or wake up several times at night unexpectedly, please call us to book a consultation appointment for Sleep Apnea.

We are open for all dental procedures, both emergency and elective. To view our extensive safety procedures and what to expect at your dental appointment, please review our guidelines.
