Periodontal Disease & The Importance of Regular Dental Checkup

One of the early signs of periodontal disease is bleeding gums while brushing or flossing. Research shows that 7 out of every 10 Canadians develop gum disease at some point in their lives. Other signs may include swollen gums, pain on chewing, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, sensitive teeth, and gum recession. These are often caused by a combination of bacteria and dental plaque. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to loss of teeth, heart conditions and other general health issues.

Generally, periodontal disease happens as a result of poor hygiene without regular professional cleanings.  There are other factors that can contribute to periodontal disease such as smoking, poor nutrition, hormonal changes, and underlying medical conditions.

Periodontal disease can easily be prevented by visiting your dentist regularly. If you are at risk of periodontal disease, your dentist will be able to diagnose it at an early stage and prevent it.
